No permits for new brick kiln; 3,491 illegal kilns to be shut down - Environmental Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan

2024-09-19

Dhaka, Thursday, September 19, 2024: Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Advisor to the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Water Resources, has announced that no new permits will be issued for brick kilns to prevent air pollution caused by them. Furthermore, 3,491 brick kilns operating without environmental clearance will be shut down. All illegally constructed brick kilns in the Chattogram Hill Tracts regions will also be relocated.

She made these remarks during a meeting held on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Secretariat, where officials from the Department of Environment and leaders of the Bangladesh Brick Manufacturing Owners Association (BBMOA) were present. The discussion focused on eco-friendly brick production, modernization of kilns, and reducing carbon emissions.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan expressed deep concern over the environmental impact of brick kilns, stating that constructing buildings is not enough if we cannot ensure a livable environment for future generations. She further added that air pollution is reducing the average life expectancy by 5-7 years. Hence, no brick kilns will be allowed to operate without a license and environmental clearance. She also emphasized strict action against corruption within the Department of Environment.

BBMOA leaders highlighted the challenges faced by the brick kiln industry and proposed adopting eco-friendly technologies. They urged government support in encouraging the use of green technology in kilns and submitted a memorandum to the Advisor.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, the Additional Secretary, the Director General of the Department of Environment, BBMOA Central Committee President Feroz Haider Khan, and leaders from various districts.

Earlier, Syeda Rizwana Hasan provided guidance to senior officials during a special meeting at the Ministry to ensure the successful implementation of ongoing projects.
